High School Student

Giving students hands-on training is the focus of the Health Occupations Career Program. The Education Department of Lake Charles Memorial has partnered with the Calcasieu Parish School Board to provide a three-year training program for select high schools. An average of 25 students each year successfully complete this program while Memorial Hospital serves as clinical site for certified nurse aide program.

  • Sophomore year: students become familiar with medical terminology.
  • Junior year: students observe various specialties, such as pharmacy, physical therapy and dietary.
  • Senior year: students refresh their learning with short observations of various disciplines and then can work on nursing units as a nursing assistant trainee.
At the end of this curriculum, participating students become certified nursing assistants and are qualified to be hired by any healthcare agency.  Barbe High, LaGrange High, Washington Marion High, Sam Houston High and St. Louis Catholic High Schools have students who participate in this school-sponsored program based on their selection process and enrollment criteria.
