Leading Southwest Louisiana in Minimally Invasive Surgery

Recognized as a Center of Excellence by the American Institute of Minimally Invasive SurgeryAIMIS

Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women offers minimally invasive gynecologic procedures and same day surgeries conducted by board-certified gynecologists and surgeons using innovative laparoscopic and hysteroscopic technologies to perform surgery through tiny incisions. This minimally invasive approach enables patients to return to routine activities in a shorter period of time while experiencing less discomfort after surgery.

Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for Women has been designated a Center of Excellence for minimally invasive surgeries by the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery (AIMIS). Memorial for Women is one of only 41 hospitals nationwide, and the only hospital in Louisiana to be designated a Center of Excellence. A hospital or surgical center can be recognized as a Center of Excellence once it has combined efforts with an accredited AIMIS surgeon and meets AMIS standards. Memorial for Women exceeds the national average for open versus minimally invasive hysterectomies. More than 80 percent of hysterectomies performed at the hospital in the past two years were minimally invasive. The national average is around 20 percent.

AIMIS is the nation's pre-eminent educator of minimally invasive surgical techniques. The organization teaches minimally invasive methods, and also supports graduates and members with opportunities to find marketing support, consulting services and strategies to help them grow and strengthen their practices.

Many women's procedures are performed using the latest minimally invasive, laparoscopic techniques such as:
  • Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
  • Laparoscopic "Sling" Bladder Lift
  • Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
  • Bladder Cystography
  • Uterine Fibroid Embolization
  • Endometrial Ablation
  • Laser-assisted Tubal Ligation
  • Sclerotherapy & Laser Vein Surgery
  • D & C

A laparoscope is a thin, fiber-optic tube that has a tiny video camera at its tip. The laparoscope is inserted through a small incision in the navel and guided to the problem area. The surgeon then inserts tiny surgical instruments through other small incisions to perform a procedure.

A hysteroscope is a thin, telescopic tube used to see inside the uterus. The use of a hysteroscope requires no incisions. The hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and into the uterus. Small micro-surgical instruments can be inserted through the hysteroscope to perform a procedure.

Stereotactic breast biopsies to assess a breast abnormality, as well as sentinel node biopsy which uses cutting-edge, pinpoint accuracy to remove the first few lymph nodes into which a tumor drains are also utilized for breast diagnostics and treatment.

Gynecologic and general surgeries are performed in our state-of-the-art surgery suites.
