Wednesday, September 07, 2011 - Memorial Hospital Introduces Hip Center of Louisiana

As a leader in orthopaedics and sports medicine in southwest Louisiana, Lake Charles Memorial Hospital is expanding these areas of care by introducing the Hip Center of Louisiana.  Under the direction of esteemed orthopaedic surgeons Nathan Cohen, MD, and Brett Cascio, MD, and orthopaedic trauma specialist Thomas W. Axelrad, MD, PhD, the Hip Center of Louisiana will offer expert, innovative treatment options to patients who suffer from hip and groin pain – even those who may not have been candidates for treatments in the past.

Many hip problems are treatable without surgical intervention, and the physicians at the Hip Center of Louisiana believe that surgery should be reserved as a last resort for patients when all other measures have been unsuccessful in returning the patient to an active lifestyle.  Certain emerging non-surgical treatments employed by the Hip Center physicians, such as Platelet-rich Plasma therapy and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate, belong to a newer branch of medicine called Orthobiologics, which follows the philosophy of merging new technologies with the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

In some cases, surgical intervention is still necessary, and the physicians at the Hip Center of Louisiana are specialized in various types of surgical procedures of the hip including hip arthroscopy, pelvic osteotomy, hip replacement, and the treatment of hip trauma such as breaks and fractures.

Dr. Nathan Cohen’s initial education was in chemical engineering followed by a masters degree in medical engineering from the world-renowned Imperial College, University of London, England.  Dr. Cohen graduated from the University of Western Ontario’s Medical School in his native Canada.  He completed his internship at St. Paul’s Hospital at the University of British Columbia and his residency at University Hospital and Victoria Hospital at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada.  He is a founding member of Orthopaedic Specialists at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Brett Cascio is a native of New Orleans and graduated from Duke University and Louisiana State University School of Medicine.  He completed his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins University and his fellowship at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado, where he participated in the care of the U.S. Ski, Colorado Rockies baseball and Denver Broncos football teams.  He is also a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves and has completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom, for which he received an Army Medical Commendation.  He is a member of Orthopaedic Specialists and currently serves as Medical Director of Sports Medicine at Memorial Hospital.

The most recent addition to Orthopaedic Specialists, Dr. Thomas W. Axelrad received his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in New Orleans.  He also received a doctorate degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from LSU Health Sciences Center, and went on to complete his internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopaedic surgery from the Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. While at Boston Medical Center, he also taught residents through the Trauma Review Program.  He later served as Director of Orthopaedics at St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and he most recently completed a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, New York.

Hip Center of Louisiana provides a full continuum of care for hip injuries and conditions from state of the art surgical and non-surgical treatments, to rehabilitation under the direction of Dr. Michael Lane, a board certified physiatrist on staff at Memorial Hospital and founder of the Rehabilitation Institute of SWLA.
