Tuesday, June 18, 2013 - Lake Charles Memorial and LSU Health Systems Finalize Moss Regional Partnership

The public-private cooperative endeavor agreement between Lake Charles Memorial Health System and Louisiana State University Health System goes into effect today, June 24, officially bringing Moss Regional Hospital's inpatient and emergency services to Memorial.

“We are excited and pleased to have the trust and support of both the LSU System and our state lawmakers when it comes to caring for the patients of Moss Regional,” says Larry Graham, president and chief executive officer of the Lake Charles Memorial Health System. “This official switch allows us to move forward and provide care for those patients within the Memorial Health System.”

W.O. Moss Regional Hospital will now be known as W.O. Moss Memorial Health Clinic.

The inpatient, emergency and surgery services have transferred to Memorial Hospital's Oak Park campus. West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital (WCCH) will provide some surgery and inpatient services for patients living in the WCCH service area.

However, the outpatient clinics and services that were previously offered at Moss will continue. These include: the asthma clinic, chemotherapy, dermatology, gyn clinic, hypertension clinic, infectious disease clinic, minor procedure clinic, ophthalmology, rheumatology, pharmacy services, primary care clinics and urgent care clinic.

A new medical office building is planned to be built on the Moss campus, at an estimated cost of $4 million. The emergency room at Moss is now an urgent care clinic to serve minor emergencies from 7 am until 10 pm. Patients with major emergencies can visit the Memorial emergency room 24 hours a day.

"As the community hospital, Memorial has a legacy of caring and service. We saw this need as a mission to provide underinsured or uninsured with more healthcare options," Graham says. "Memorial is excited about the opportunity to provide much needed services to the patients of Moss Regional."

Much of the specialty care, which is currently sent to other hospitals in the LSU Health System, can be provided by Memorial allowing patients to stay closer to home. The goal of the new configuration is improving access to primary and specialty care for Moss Regional patients, giving them more options and the ability to access services in our region.

Memorial’s services include: cardiology, ear nose and throat, emergency medicine, digital radiology diagnostics, gastroenterology, family medicine, internal medicine, hematology, laboratory services, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics, obstetrics/genecology, pain medicine, pediatric intensive care, physical and occupational rehabilitation, pulmonology, radiation oncology, surgery and urology.

Around 225 state employees that once worked for the LSU Health System on the Moss campus are now employed in the same capacity by the Memorial Health System.

"I know there's always angst and worry about transition, but what made Moss a special place for those who worked there isn't the building, but really it's the people who dedicated their careers to serving the underprivileged," Graham says. "However, as they join the Memorial family, I feel confident they will bring that spirit of caring to Memorial and help their patients make a smooth transition."
