In 2015, a study was commissioned by the Board of Directors of the Lake
Charles Memorial Health System to assess the impact of its operations
and facilities on the economy and quality of life in Southwest Louisiana.
The study was conducted by economist Dr. Michael Kurth and Dr. Daryl V.
Burckel, a professor of accounting at McNeese State University with assistance
from Dr. Morris Coats, a healthcare economist at Nicholls State University.
Lake Charles Memorial Health System has significantly expanded our services
and facilities since 2007 with continued expansion anticipated through
2017. The number of outpatient visits to our hospitals and facilities
has increased 84% since 2007; our inpatient care has increased 16% since
2011, more than double the statewide average; and our inpatient share
of the healthcare market has increased from 42.9% at the end of 2008 to
just under 50% in 2015. LCMHS is now the third largest non-government
employer in Southwest Louisiana, accounting directly and indirectly for
8.3% of all the jobs in Calcasieu Parish.
Calcasieu Parish is currently in the midst of an economic boom that is
expected to increase the population of the parish by 25-30% over the next
decade, and the Lake Charles Memorial Health System is continuing to expand
and improve its operations to meet the growing healthcare needs of the
region. Keeping healthcare local is the nexus of a true community hospital.
As the regional healthcare hub, Memorial remains anchored to our roots
