Memorial Specialty Hospital

Memorial Specialty Hospital, a part of the Lake Charles Memorial Health Care System, is a long-term acute care hospital (LTACH) that specializes in the treatment of patients with serious medical conditions that require care on an ongoing basis but no longer require intensive care or extensive diagnostic procedures. LTACHs were initially created in the 1990s in an effort to decrease Medicare costs by facilitating prompt discharge from hospital ICUs for patients with difficult to treat conditions. Memorial Specialty Hospital is a 29-bed long term acute care LTACH providing hospital care to critically ill patients with high medical acuity who require an inpatient stay of 25 days or longer. The majority of patients are admitted after a stay in a short-term hospital. These patients are typically discharged from the intensive or critical care units. MSH specializes in:

  • Three to six concurrent, active diagnoses and an acute episode on top of several chronic illnesses and co-morbidities that cannot be treated effectively at a general hospital level of care.
  • Multiple acute complexities as determined by a physician assessment and requiring daily physician intervention.
  • Typical medical conditions treated include:
    • Prolonged mechanical ventilator use and weaning from the ventilator
    • Chronic renal failure requiring ongoing dialysis
    • Intensive respiratory or pulmonary care
    • Multiple intravenous medications or transfusions
    • Complex, severe wound care
    • Multiple co-morbidities
    • At-risk for colonization with multi-drug resistant organisms and requiring multiple intravenous antibiotics for 4-6 weeks

Long-term acute care hospitals like Memorial Specialty Hospital have a niche role in the health care system providing coordinated medical care to critically ill patients with complex conditions over an extended period of time. Patients may be referred via:

  • Acute Care Hospital
  • Wound Care Center
  • Physician's Office
  • Home Health
  • Nursing Home
  • Skilled Nursing Facility
  • Case Manager
  • Social Worker
  • Diagnoses
Extended hospitalization may be necessary for patients experiencing complications from:
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Infectious Disease/Sepsis
  • Wound Complications
  • Pulmonary/Vent Weaning
  • Pneumonia
  • Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome
  • Strokes
  • Closed Head Injuries
  • Renal Failure
  • Orthopedic Complications

Although Memorial Specialty Hospital patients tend to be critically ill with multiple complex conditions, approximately 75% are able to recover and return home (home with home health support or to their nursing home). These results are better than the national average.
