Health Tip: Treating Swimmer's Ear

(HealthDay News) -- Swimmer's ear, medically called otitis externa, is an infection that occurs when fluid gets trapped inside the ear. It is a painful condition that requires a doctor's treatment.

The Nemours Foundation mentions these treatment guidelines for swimmer's ear:

  • Administer as directed any prescription antibiotics and steroid drops prescribed by your doctor.

  • If the ear is swollen or packed with debris or pus, expect the doctor to gently clean out the ear.

  • Offer over-the-counter pain relief medication to a child; your doctor may recommend prescription pain medication if pain is severe.

  • Ease discomfort by placing a warm washcloth or heating pad against the ear.
