Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) Podcast
Some newborns, especially those who are born prematurely or who have a family history of congenital heart disease, may have a condition called patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a persistent opening between two major blood vessels leading from the heart. This heart defect often closes on its own or is readily treatable. Left untreated, a patent ductus arteriosus can cause too much blood to flow through the heart, weakening the heart muscle and causing heart failure and other complications. Dr. Steven Howe, a board certified cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon on staff at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, discusses treatment options and the long-term outcome for those infants who need surgical intervention.
