Athletic performance on the field depends largely on what occurs off the field. Lake Charles Memorial Hospital offers a comprehensive sports medicine program for high schools in both Beauregard and Calcasieu parishes, as well as McNeese State University in Lake Charles.

The program began in 1987 under Dr. David Drez, Jr., orthopaedic surgeon and now medical director of the Sports Medicine Program. Our goal is to continuously work with the athlete to promote a lifestyle of wellness. Our priority is to avoid injuries. However, due to the competitive nature of athletics, injuries do occur. When that happens, we provide the rehabilitation and conditioning needed not just for the game, but also for a healthy life.

The Sports Medicine program at MSU is housed in the Dowell Fontenot Sports Medicine building, located on the MSU campus. We are involved in the 16 sports offered; nine for women and seven for men, with a total of approximately 350 students. From day-to-day operations, to the consistent training schedule of the athletes, we provide a total program to promote and maintain physical fitness.

Our high school athletic trainers visit area schools, evaluate athletes and make recommendations to coaches, parents and athletes concerning injuries. We work with the families when a referral to a medical facility or physician is necessary. Also, we assist coaches during P.E. classes, consult with them during off-season workouts and cover on-site practices as needed. A walk-in clinic is held every Saturday morning during football season for athletes who may have been injured during a Friday night high school game.  Diagnostic testing and treatment is available for sports injuries.
