Sports Medicine

Considered by many to be the pioneer of sports medicine in southwest Louisiana, David Drez, Jr., MD, board certified orthopaedic surgeon, began actively recruiting athletic trainers for McNeese in 1975. In addition to on-field medical coverage as team physician, Dr. Drez started the first Saturday morning sports injury clinic for injured athletes, as well as fall and spring pre-participation physicals for student athletes in Calcasieu and surrounding parishes.  Those programs continue today and have grown to provide over 800 annual physicals for our area's young athletes.

The sports medicine program, now under the medical direction of Dr. Brett Cascio, MD, orthopedic surgeon, whose expertise has included the care of the U.S. Ski team, Colorado Rockies Baseball team, Denver Bronco’s Football team and the Johns Hopkins Lacrosse and Football teams, has grown to include seven athletic trainers that currently cover McNeese State University and 22 high school athletic programs in southwest Louisiana. The physicians and trainers routinely provide medical support both on and off the field for MSU and participating high schools assessing injuries, consulting with coaches and administrators, maintaining training programs, following up on injured athletes and their rehabilitation, and supervising and training student trainers.
