Prenatal Genetic Testing with Dr. Gisele McKinney
These are tests that help determine if an unborn baby may have a genetic disorder like Down’s Syndrome, Tay Sachs Disease or Sickle Cell Anemia.  There are two main types of testing: screening tests, which are blood tests that are typically done in the first and second trimesters and diagnostic tests like the amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling or CVS which give a more accurate diagnosis but are a bit more invasive.

It’s up to each expectant mother based on the advice of her doctor.  Some women that have a higher risk of having a baby with a genetic disorder may wish to have the tests so they can have some peace of mind and be better prepared.  Those at higher risk include pregnant women of advanced age, women who have had a family history of genetic disorders or who have had another child with a genetic disorder.

To find out more about genetic testing call Dr. McKinney at (337) 480-5510.
