Keys for Kids

The Foundation at Lake Charles Memorial Health System received 12 used, upright pianos in late August 2018, donated by Hall Piano Company of Metairie, LA. These pianos were the beginning of the Foundation’s latest community initiative, Keys for Kids. Shortly afterward, an additional 10 pianos were donated.

The Foundation’s goal forKeys for Kids is to donate one hand-painted piano to all 34 public & private elementary schools in the Lake Charles area. Eventually, we would like to include all SWLA public & private elementary schools. We hope through this initiative we will be planting a seed for the arts in the minds of young school-aged kids.

All of the art work is being done by volunteer artists and staff from various hospital departments. Memorial firmly believes that healing through the arts works as a supplement to traditional medicine and in that regard started the Art for the Soul program ten years ago. We now have over 900 donated, famed prints by Louisiana artists hanging on the walls of our campuses and in our clinics. The First Monday in the Atrium music series is also a success and features talented musicians, mainly from the faculty and students of McNeese University, providing music for our patients, staff and visitors on the first Monday of every month.

In addition to partnering with Hall Music Company and the George Rodrigue Foundation for the Arts for the initial pianos, we received Sherwin Williams as another partner providing all paints for the program. The Shearman Foundation is helping with resources to have the pianos repaired and tuned.

Once we have enough pianos painted for our Lake Charles schools, we will have them tuned and will partner with the Calcasieu Parish School Board to have the majority of the pianos delivered to public elementary schools. Our friends with the Lake Charles Fire Department will deliver to private schools identified. In short, this is a wonderful collaboration from the community - for the community - and by Lake Charles community hospital & foundation.

If you are interested in becoming involved through financial support for expenses like tuning, cleaning and repairing; donating a workable piano; or by participating as an artist to paint a piano, please contact the Foundation.
