Preventative Medicines

Women's Health Services in Lake Charles

The saying is so familiar it's almost a cliché: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." But is it true? Absolutely. Taking charge of your health and making choices that proactively facilitate your wellbeing is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Our goal at Lake Charles Memorial Health System is to partner with you in that mission.

Should I Take Preventative Medications?

Preventative medicine can have many positive affects. That being said, it is important to acknowledge that every situation is different. Talk with your doctor about the treatment plan / preventative plan that is right for you.

Some types of preventative medicines include:

  • Breast cancer drugs - Some medications have been proven to help prevent breast cancer. You might consider asking your doctor about these drugs if there is a history of breast cancer in your immediate family.
  • Hormone therapy for menopause - Many women going through menopause opt to undergo hormone replacement therapy by using estrogen to relieve their menopausal side effects. Ask your doctor about estrogen for menopause. Note that estrogen should NOT be used to stave off diseases such as heart disease.
  • Immunizations - It is important to stay on top of your immunizations! This includes your annual flu shot, tetanus shots, and whooping cough shots. Patients aged 60 and over should get immunized against shingles; patients 65 and older should get pneumonia shots. Discuss any other immunizations you may be a candidate for with your doctor.
  • Aspirin - Aspirin can be used to help in preventing strokes. Discuss this option with your doctor today.
