Lake Charles Memorial Sports Medicine Contract Renewed with CPSB

Lake Charles Memorial Sports Medicine will continue serving the student athletes of Calcasieu Parish Schools for the next four years. The Calcasieu Parish School Board recently voted in favor of the extension.

Under the agreement, Memorial Sports Medicine will provide athletic trainers to all Calcasieu Parish schools. The trainers will make daily school visits and cover games and practices. Memorial’s full range of services including orthopedic surgery, cardiology, rehabilitation, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, pain management and pediatric intensive care are available to the student athletes should the need arise.

“We take our commitment to Calcasieu’s student athletes very serious and provide them with resources to not only recover from an injury, but also prevent them,” says Jamey Rasberry, Director of Lake Charles Memorial Sports Medicine. “We offer the only full service, acute care hospital in the region with every specialty integrated in one medical system. That means our athletes will not have to leave the area, for whatever service they should need.”

Along with providing annual sports physicals, Memorial has implemented a concussion management program that compares post injury brain function to pre‐injury brain function to help determine if and when it is safe for an athlete to return to play.

ACL Injury Prevention program has been implemented to determine which athletes are at a greater risk for an ACL injury and to put them on a preventative exercise program. A safe weight program has been established for wrestlers and a long-term dietician nutrition analysis of student athletes to proactively improve health and wellness.

Memorial also created the Foundation for Fairplay (F3) in order to provide a more level playing field in the areas of preventable injury needs. The fund assists schools in acquiring equipment such as quality football helmets, training room equipment needed for the rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and creating safe physical fitness surroundings. Funds are distributed through an application process, which is reviewed by a volunteer board of directors.

As Lake Charles' community hospital, these services are offered at no cost to the school district.
