Dr. Bryan Barootes Receives Mentor Award

Dr. BarootesBryan Barootes, MD, was recently awarded the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CASEM) Educator/Mentor Award at the 2018 CASEM Annual Meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia. CASEM is the multispecialty Sport Medicine authority in Canada.

Dr. Barootes has been involved in providing sports medicine care in Southwest Louisiana since his arrival in 2000 as a faculty member of the Memorial/LSUHSC Family Medicine Residency Program at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. He is a team physician at McNeese State University and provides care at the high school level. He has been involved in the education of medical students, residents, athletic trainers, physical therapists and coaches. Dr. Barootes is currently the Chief Examiner for the CASEM Diploma Exam in Sport Medicine, a multispecialty exam recognizing Sport Medicine expertise in Canada.


The CASEM was developed because of specific medical problems presented at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico, and became officially incorporated on June 8, 1970. Since that time it has evolved from an organization providing medical care to elite athletes at international events to the leading source of information and expertise in the art and science of sport medicine.
