RN Student Extern Program
The RN Student Extern Program offered at Lake Charles Memorial Health System is for senior nursing students currently enrolled and working toward their RN degree. It gives the student a chance to prepare themselves for a smoother entry into the professional, hospital environment by following an experienced RN. Under the supervision of RNs, the externs are allowed to perform certain nursing skills after being checked off on those skills during orientation. The Extern rotates to different departments every month, so that they may get the opportunity to explore a variety of nursing fields to identify the best career fit for them.
Being the only full-service hospital in the Lake Charles area, we offer many options for the Extern to choose from after graduation.
Nursing students are hired after entering clinicals.
- For the Extern hired a full year before graduation or longer, would be required to work 50 hours a semester.
- A $20,000 sign-on bonus paid over 2 years is available if you work full-time after the 2 years.

Nursing students should look at the RN Extern Program as an ongoing interview process. It gives them a chance to meet and work with staff and managers on different units. We offer the student a chance to receive more clinical experience in a hospital setting to make their transition from student nurse to RN as smooth as possible and give them a chance to acclimate to our hospital culture.
