Smoking Cessation

Lake Charles Memorial would like to remind all hospital staff, patients and visitors that the entire Memorial Health System is Tobacco Free. Tobacco use of any kind will NOT be permitted on any property owned or managed by the System, or any of its affiliates, by hospital staff, patients or visitors. This includes all tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other tobacco products such as chewing tobacco and snuff). E-cigarettes (vaping etc.) are also included.

This includes use of tobacco inside vehicles parked on Memorial Health System properties. Employees and visitors are also asked to refrain from going to neighboring properties and business to use tobacco. Please see below for smoking/tobacco cessation resources.

How Soon Will I See The Benefits?

Some health resolutions take awhile to bring about positive results. Trying to eat healthier? Weight loss can take weeks and months. Inaugurating a new exercise program? Getting in shape is an uphill battle!

But if you want to stop smoking, you should know that the positive results are immediate:

  • 20 minutes after you stop smoking you have improved your blood pressure and pulse rate.
  • 8 hours after you stop smoking your blood's carbon monoxide and oxygen levels are back to normal.
  • 1 day after you stop smoking you have a markedly decreased risk of getting a heart attack.
  • 2 days after you stop smoking your body is beginning to recover, renewing nerve endings and your senses of smell and taste. Food looks better and everything feels better!
  • 2 weeks after you stop smoking your lung function and your circulation have both improved dramatically. Whether you're walking up the stairs, working out, running to catch a bus, playing with your kids, or chasing your dog, you feel younger, faster, and less winded.
  • Between 1 and 9 months after you stop smoking your body has changed in numerous ways: You have less sinus congestion, coughing, and shortness of breath, and you have more energy!
  • 1 year after you stop smoking your risk of getting a heart attack is half of what it was when you smoked.
  • 5 years after you stop smoking you have the exact same risk of getting stroke as a person who has never smoked single cigarette.
  • 10 years after you stop smoking you have 50% less chance of being diagnosed with fatal lung cancer as a smoker.
  • 15 years after you stop smoking you have roughly the same risk for coronary heart disease and death as a person who has never smoked.
