Bone density testing is a useful tool for detecting osteoporosis by measuring bone mass. Osteoporosis screenings are particularly important for women, because 80% of patients diagnosed with osteoporosis are women. This disease puts you at increase risk for fractures due to a lack of bone density, which is visible on a bone density scan, called DEXA scanning. It is also useful for women who are currently being treated for osteoporosis, for example, if your physician wants to check if your medications are working.
DEXA is similar to X-ray imaging tests, as it uses a tiny dose of ionizing radiation to show inside the body. Your doctor will likely look at the lower spine and hips to measure your bone mass. The test is quick, simple, noninvasive, and requires no specific preparation.
