April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. What you should do you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted?
- Get to a safe place and tell someone you trust. Call 911 or your local law enforcement agency.
- Do NOT bathe, wash, change clothes, eat, drink or go to the bathroom, if possible to preserve any evidence on your body.
- If it has been less than 120 hours since the assault, go to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital ER and ask for the SANE nurse.
- If it has been more than 120 hours, medical treatment for sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy testing should occur at the Calcasieu Parish Health Unit or your private physicians office.
- Advocates are available 24/7, free and confidential.
