Official Sports Medicine Partner of McNeese Athletics
In 2024, Lake Charles Memorial Health System became the official sports medicine partner of McNeese Athletics through one of the largest investments in the university's athletic history. The partnership is a reflection of a shared commitment to supporting student-athletes both on and off the field while strengthening one of Southwest Louisiana's most beloved institutions - McNeese State University.
This partnership is more than just athletics - it represents an investment into student success, workforce development, community pride, and the future of Southwest Louisiana. By supporting the Cowgirls and Cowboys of MSU, Memorial is helping ensure that student-athletes have access to high-quality healthcare and sports medicine services trusted by families throughout the region.
One of the most valuable aspects of Memorial's partnership with McNeese Athletics is the presence of athletic trainers who work directly with student-athletes on a daily basis. These trainers are part of a larger network of physician and specialized orthopedic and surgical specialists.
Athletic trainers are often among the first people athletes turn to when they have questions, concerns, or injuries. They are present during practices, training sessions, games, travel, rehabilitation, and recovery. By building relationships with athletes over time, trainers gain a deeper understanding of each athlete's health history, performance goals, and unique needs - an important element of any healthcare provider relationship.
The daily presence allows health or performance issues to be addressed earlier, recovery plans to be more effective, and communication between athletes, coaches, and medical provider to be stronger. Simply put, athletic trainers are part of the winning team!
This historic partnership includes a $2.5 million commitment over three years, one of the largest investments in McNeese Athletics to date. Through Memorial's Sports Medicine team of athletic trainers and physicians, McNeese athletes receive comprehensive care both on and off the field – reflecting our shared dedication to health, performance, and safety.
Memorial’s sports medicine team works closely with McNeese coaches, athletic trainers, and athletic staff to provide injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, recovery support, and return-to-play guidance across McNeese’s NCAA Division I athletic programs. From practices and training sessions to game day and postseason competition, student-athletes have access to comprehensive care from trusted local healthcare professionals who understand the unique demands of collegiate athletics.
For Memorial, the partnership extends beyond sports. It is an investment in the students, programs, and traditions that help define Southwest Louisiana. By supporting McNeese Athletics, Memorial is helping create a healthier, safer athletic experience while strengthening the connection between healthcare, education, and community. Together, Memorial and McNeese are building opportunities for student success, promoting wellness across the region, and ensuring athletes have the support they need to compete, recover, and perform at their highest level.
The benefits of this partnership extend far beyond wins and losses. Student-athletes who stay healthy are more likely to remain engaged academically, continue competing, and fully participate in the college experience. Access to quality sports medicine services helps reduce time lost to injury while supporting physical and mental wellbeing.
For Southwest Louisiana, the partnership reinforces the connection between healthcare, education, and community. It creates opportunities for collaboration, supports student success, strengthens one of the region's most visible institutions, and demonstrates what can happen when local organizations invest in one another. Because when McNeese succeeds, Southwest Louisiana succeeds.
Most people think that sports medicine is only for athletes who suffer injuries during a game. In reality, sports medicine is far more comprehensive. Sports medicine is a specialized field of medicine focused on helping athletes prevent injuries, optimize performance, recover safely and maintain long-term health.
Sports medicine requires a multi-disciplinary team. It brings together physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, orthopedic specialists, rehabilitation experts, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals to support athletes throughout every stage of their athletic journey.
Today's sports medicine programs focus not only on emergency injury treatment, but also on:
The goal of an athletic trainer is simple: help athletes compete safely while supporting their long-term wellbeing.
Sports medicine has changed dramatically over the past several decades. What was once limited to coaching staff or game-day injury response has evolved into a year-round healthcare partnership focused on prevention, education, and whole-body wellness.
Today's athletic trainers are state-licensed and nationally certified healthcare professionals who serve as a critical link between athletes, coaches, parents, physicians and healthcare providers. They monitor athletes' health, identify potential concerns before they become serious injuries, assist with rehabilitation, help athletes and their family navigate the healthcare pipeline, and help guide safe return-to-play decisions. Rather than only responding when something goes wrong, athletic trainers now play an active role in helping athletes stay healthy, strong, and available to compete.
McNeese State University is far more than a college - and the impact of McNeese Athletics extends far beyond gameday. McNeese is a source of pride, tradition, and growth for Southwest Louisiana. Thousands of Poke fans fill the stadium and arenas to support their beloved Pokes and celebrate the university's success. By investing in McNeese Athletics and the health of its players, Memorial is investing in the future of our region. Healthy athletes become stronger students, future leaders and engaged members of our workforce and community. Successful athletic programs stimulate economic vitality and visibility, raising the quality of life that makes Southwest Louisiana a great place to live, work and learn.
This partnership reflects a shared commitment to ensuring Southwest Louisiana continues to thrive - both on and off the field.
