Community Safety & Health Education

At Lake Charles Memorial Health System, our commitment to improving health extends far beyond patient care. As a community health system, we believe one of the most effective ways to improve health outcomes is through education, prevention, and preparedness. By providing access to life-saving training, public safety programs, health education resources, and wellness initiatives, we are helping individuals gain the knowledge and confidence needed to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.

Every year, Memorial partners with schools, businesses, community organizations, first responders, public agencies and other not-for-profit organizations to sponsor and deliver programs that support community needs and some of the most important health and safety challenges facing Southwest Louisiana. From emergency response training and injury prevention to wellness education and public health awareness, these initiatives empower community members to take an active role in their own health and wellbeing.

These efforts are rooted in a simple belief: healthier communities are built through education. Whether teaching someone how to respond during a medical emergency, helping students understand the consequences of impaired driving, or providing resources that encourage healthier lifestyles, Memorial is committed to creating opportunities that make a lasting impact. By investing in prevention and community outreach today, we are helping build a stronger, safer Southwest Louisiana for generations to come.

Stop the Bleed Program

Learn the Skills That Save Lives

As Southwest Louisiana's regional trauma center, Lake Charles Memorial Health System partners with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma to offer Stop the Bleed®, a nationally recognized training program designed to help individuals respond during life-threatening bleeding emergencies.

The leading cause of preventable death after injury is severe bleeding. Through Stop the Bleed, participants learn simple but critical techniques that can help save a life before emergency responders arrive.

The course includes:

  • Direct pressure techniques
  • Wound packing
  • Tourniquet application
  • Hands-on skills practice
  • Emergency response education

Designed for both medical and non-medical individuals, the course is especially valuable for teachers, coaches, law enforcement officers, industrial workers, construction professionals, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone interested in being prepared during an emergency.

Sudden Impact

Changing Lives Through Prevention

Sudden Impact is a free public safety program offered through a partnership between the Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, and Lake Charles Memorial Health System.

Designed for high school students, the program provides a powerful and realistic look at the consequences of impaired driving through mock crash demonstrations, survivor stories, presentations from law enforcement officers, and firsthand perspectives from healthcare professionals.

Students also gain insight into what happens after a crash by learning about the trauma care process and the lifesaving work performed by emergency responders and healthcare teams.

By combining education with real-world experiences, Sudden Impact encourages students to make safer decisions and understand the lasting impact impaired driving can have on individuals, families, and communities.

To schedule a Sudden Impact presentation, contact your local Louisiana State Police Troop or the Lake Charles Memorial Trauma Office at 337.494.2114.
