Stop the Bleed is a safety initiative lead by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. As the region's trauma center, Lake Charles Memorial Health System has partnered with the American College of Surgeons to offer these life-saving courses in Southwest Louisiana.
The number one cause of preventable death after injury is bleeding. Stop the Bleed teaches three quick actions that can be used to save a life. There is no age requirement for this course; however, some of the content can be graphic. Stop the Bleed course takes a little over an hour and includes a formal presentation followed by hands-on practices with direct pressure, packing a wound, and using a tourniquet.
This course is great for laypeople with no medical backgrounds. Those who may particularly benefit from the course include teachers, coaches, industrial workers, construction works, industry workers, law enforcement and security officers, outdoor enthusiasts, and heavy machinery operators.

Sudden Impact is a free public safety program by the Louisiana State Police. This program is made possible for students in Southwest Louisiana through the partnership of LSP, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, and Lake Charles Memorial Health System. This program educates high school students about the dangers of impaired driving through mock crashes, stories from survivors, law enforcement, and healthcare professionals.
This program involves realistic simulations of car crashes using students' actors to demonstrate the immediate aftermath of a crash, as well as trauma center visits to see the process involved in treating victims of these crashes.
