Meet Carlos Choucino, MD
Dr. Choucino is an internal medicine physician who holds specialized training in clinical infectious disease treatment. In 1996, Dr. Choucino was instrumental in bringing the first clinic to care for and treat patients with HIV/AIDS in southwest Louisiana, the Comprehensive Care Clinic. This clinic continues to care for the community today. He serves as the Medical Director of Infectious Disease and HIV Grants at Lake Charles Memorial Health System and was chosen as the recipient of the Laureate Award from the Louisiana Chapter of the American College of Physicians. This award honors those who have led by example in their unwavering commitment to excellence in medical care, education, research and service to their community.
Dr. Choucino has over four decades of experience in infectious diseases. He began his medical education with a bachelor's degree from San Marcos University’s School of Biology, followed by a medical degree from San Fernando School of Medicine: San Marcos University. He continued his medical training with an internal medicine residency at the Navy Medical Center at San Marcos University, and an internship and residency at Southern Illinois University. Dr. Choucino then received specialized medical training in clinical infectious diseases with a fellowship at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Choucino is a fellow of the American College of Physician and Infectious Diseases Society of America and has received awards from McNeese State University’s School of Nursing in appreciation of his outstanding medical services. He received Memorial’s Golden Stethoscope Award in January 2023. Prior to joining the medical team at Lake Charles Memorial Health System, Dr. Choucino provided care for numerous patients in Peru, South Cameron Memorial Hospital in Cameron, LA, and served as the medical director for the rehabilitation unit at Lake Charles Memorial and St. Patrick’s Hospital in Lake Charles. He has previously served as medical director of Primary Care and Chief of Staff at the former W.O. Moss Regional Medical Center, now known as Moss Memorial Health Clinic. Dr. Choucino has continued to provide excellent care to the medical community through his academic appointments as an adjunct professor at McNeese State University’s School of Nursing and clinical assistant professor at Louisiana State University’s Family Practice Residency Program. He has published numerous academic works in the field of infectious diseases and has led the field in grant writing and early prevention education.
