How to Prepare for you Inpatient Rehab Stay

What to Bring With You

Bring three to five changes or comfortable, loose-fitting, wash-and-wear clothing. You will be involved in an active exercise program. Sweat suits are perfect. Put your name on your belongings in the event they are misplaced. You may be able to launder your own clothes on the unit as part of your therapy program. Otherwise, please arrange for your laundry to be done at home by your family or friends.

Other things you should bring with you include:

  • Any special equipment you have

  • Bathrobe / Housecoat

  • Comfortable pajamas

  • Dentures

  • Eyeglasses / Contact Lenses

  • Hearing aids and batteries

  • Pants and/or shorts

  • Reading materials

  • Shirts/Blouses

  • Shoes - Velcro fasteners & rubber soles are preferable

  • Socks

  • Sweaters

  • Toiletries

  • Undergarments

What to Leave Home

Please leave your valuables at home and bring only enough money for items such as magazines or snacks. The hospital cannot be responsible for any money, valuables or other belongings left in your room.

Remember, you will be away from your room for most of the day.

Please do not bring electrical equipment (razors, hair dryers, etc.) with you. Check with your nurse if there are any questions.

In the event that you have to bring something of value during your stay, there is a safe located here in the hospital for your accommodation. Please let your nurse know if you need to utilize this service.

Daily Schedule

Because you will have a busy schedule to follow, your day begins early. Breakfast may be served as early as 7:15 am. Bathing and dressing activities begin as early as 6:00 am. Instead of staying in pajamas or a hospital gown, you will be expected to dress each day in your own clothes. Staff members will assist you with dressing as part of your therapy.

Following your evaluations, an individualized therapy schedule will be attached to your walker or wheelchair. Each day will be very busy and you will be encouraged to be out of bed and active most of the day. Nap times are not scheduled, but if you feel you need to rest during the day, breaks will be planned.

A staff member will assist you in getting to your scheduled therapy sessions. We strongly encourage attendance in all of your therapies. In the event you become ill and feel unable to attend, your physician will be notified. Because insurance mandates regular attendance, we must closely monitor participation in your therapy program.

Rehabilitation services will be provided seven days a week as needed.

Occupational and Physical therapy will be provided at a minimum of 1.5 hours per weekday. These therapies will also be provided for at least 30 minutes on Saturday and Sunday. Speech Pathology Service will be provided for 30 minutes to 2 hours as needed for 7 days per week. During the weekday, treatment will consist of Physical and Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Neuropsychology Services, Social Service Discharge Planning, and Rehabilitation Physiatry. Rehab Nursing will be provided 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Your meals will be served in the Rehab Center dining room. Meals will be provided in your room only if there is a medical reason. Eating your meals in the dining room will allow you time to socialize with other patients. Please encourage your family to pay attention to any diet restrictions and not to bring food that may harm you.

We encourage the emotional support visitors can provide during your rehabilitation. However, we recommend that visitors wait until after 4:00 pm. With your busy schedule during the day, this has proven to be the most convenient time for visitors. Special situations may be discussed with your case manager and/or social worker.
