Building Southwest Louisiana's Workforce

SOWELA and Lake Charles Memorial Create Pathways for the Next Generation of Healthcare Professionals
A strong healthcare system depends on having skilled professionals ready to care for the community—not only today, but for generations to come.
That's why workforce development is at the heart of the longstanding partnership between SOWELA Technical Community College and Lake Charles Memorial Health System.
In this video, Dr. Neil Aspinwall, Chancellor of SOWELA Technical Community College, and Devon Hyde, President and CEO of Lake Charles Memorial Health System, discuss how education and hands-on clinical experience work together to prepare students for high-demand healthcare careers while strengthening the workforce of Southwest Louisiana.
Connecting the Classroom to the Clinical Environment
SOWELA's mission centers on preparing students for high-skill, high-wage and high-demand careers. For students pursuing healthcare professions, however, classroom education is only part of that preparation.
Through its partnership with Memorial, students have opportunities to take what they've learned and apply it in an actual healthcare environment.
Memorial serves as a clinical training site for students across nursing and allied health programs, giving them opportunities to learn alongside nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals. Memorial team members also serve as preceptors and clinical instructors, helping students develop the hands-on skills and real-world understanding they'll need when they enter the workforce.
That experience allows students to see what their future careers actually look like while building confidence before they graduate.
Creating Healthcare Talent Here at Home
For Memorial, investing in healthcare education is also an investment in the future health of Southwest Louisiana.
Recruiting healthcare professionals from outside the region will continue to be important, but developing talent locally creates another sustainable source of skilled professionals. Students can receive their education here, gain clinical experience here and discover meaningful career opportunities without having to leave the community.
That benefits more than the healthcare workforce. It gives local residents access to rewarding careers while contributing to the economic vitality of the communities Memorial serves.
A Workforce Pipeline Southwest Louisiana Can Depend On
Hospitals can invest in new technology, facilities and services, but those investments only make a difference when skilled people are there to provide the care.
By connecting SOWELA's education and technical training with Memorial's clinical environment, the partnership helps build a sustainable pipeline of healthcare professionals prepared to serve Southwest Louisiana.
The long-term vision goes even further: today's students becoming tomorrow's experienced healthcare professionals and leaders—and eventually helping train the generation that follows them.
Learn here. Train here. Build a career here. Care for Southwest Louisiana here at home.
