Getting Back to the Field: Sports Medicine in Action at Iowa High School

  • Category: Community Partnership

Supporting Student-Athletes Through Injury, Recovery and the Moments that Matter Most

In Southwest Louisiana, high school football is about more than what happens under the lights on Friday night. Teams become families, stadiums bring communities together, and the lessons student-athletes learn through competition often stay with them long after their playing days are over. At Iowa High School, that sense of community was on full display during a historic championship season—but one player's journey to the field began long before the first snap.

After battling a critical illness that required an extended hospital stay, the road back to football wasn't easy. Recovery meant rebuilding strength, reconditioning his body and working toward the goal of competing again. Along the way, his coaches, family, community and Memorial athletic trainer became an important support system, helping him navigate both the physical and emotional challenges of returning to the sport he loved.

In this video Iowa Head Football Coach Tommy Johns, Memorial Athletic Trainer Chris Lehaye, and former player CJ Bellows discuss how athletic trainers provide vital support to student-athletes and coaching staff, contributing to the culture and success of the team.

Athletic Trainers: Part of the Team

Through Lake Charles Memorial Health System's partnership with the Calcasieu Parish School Board, Memorial athletic trainers are embedded in local schools, providing student-athletes with access to sports medicine expertise where they need it most.

That daily presence allows athletic trainers to know their athletes beyond an injury. They understand their personalities, recognize changes that could signal a problem and develop the trust necessary to guide athletes through difficult moments. From injury prevention and concussion management to rehabilitation, emergency response and return-to-play decisions, athletic trainers help ensure student-athletes can compete as safely as possible.

For coaches, having that expertise on-site means they can focus on coaching while knowing an experienced healthcare professional is there to evaluate injuries and make decisions with the athlete's health and safety at the center.

Building Strength Beyond the Field

Athletic training isn't only about getting an athlete back into a game. Recovery can teach patience, perseverance and the importance of relying on the people around you.

Those lessons mirror what Iowa football strives to teach its players every day. Athletics challenge students to overcome adversity, push beyond what they thought they could accomplish and learn how to respond when life doesn't go according to plan.

For CJ Bellow, those lessons became very real. After a long road through illness and recovery, he returned to the field surrounded by the same support system that had been there throughout his journey—and became part of a historic season for his team and community.

Through Memorial's partnership with CPSB, athletic trainers are helping make stories like his possible across Southwest Louisiana: caring for student-athletes today while helping prepare them for whatever comes next.
